Although there are branded computers that excel in the multimedia and gaming segments, some scaled-down models are available as well. With the multimedia fad these days, even the most basic computers have the features that satisfy users' appetites for music and videos. The HCL EzeeBee does all of that pretty well, and that too at a modest price. What's more, you can also turn the computer into a decent gaming PC by installing a separate graphics card. Sounds interesting? Let's see what more is in store with the Max XP Z999.

FEATURES: It's interesting to see how HCL has managed to hit the sweet spot-value for money-which is what appeals to most people. The EzeeBee Max XP Z999 is attractive for various reasons, some of them being its features, value for money and performance. Powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, 1.80 GHz processor, the machine encases a motherboard based on the Intel 945 GZ chipset. This configuration along with 1 GB DDR2 RAM and a spacious 160 GB hard drive handles the preloaded Windows Vista with ease. Apart from that, mainstream applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel sail pretty smoothly as well.

The onboard graphics suffice for office work and basic multimedia. However, if you'd like to enjoy gaming, simply slide a mid-range graphics card into the PCle x16 slot and you'll have a decent gaming machine. A key feature is that the PC uses a huge CPU fan that will ensure a longer life span and better overall performance of the machine (especially the processor). Apart from standard features such as USB, Ethernet and audio jacks at the back of the cabinet, the EzeeBee also features two USB ports and input/output audio jacks on the front panel.

BUILD QUALITY: We were impressed by how compact and smart the cabinet
of the EzeeBee looks. Its sturdy build complements its design. Although the mouse and keyboard look and feel pretty cheap, their performance doesn't merit any complaint. The base of the LCD monitor could have been more stable; nonetheless, it's much better than many monitors that get pushed with a feather-light touch.

PERFORMANCE:
Looking at the configuration, we'd say that it's a basic PC intended mainly for mainstream applications such as office work. The overall performance is quite impressive and if Windows XP was installed on this machine, the chances of disappointment would be close to nil. As far as multimedia is concerned, the onboard graphics, 17-inch TFT monitor and the bundled speakers equate to above average entertainment.

VERDICT: If you're out to buy a PC mainly for office work and light multimedia, then go for it. It's good value for money.
FOR: Good cooling for the CPU, good overall performance, sturdy build, attractive price tag.
AGAINST: The keyboard and mouse could have been more aesthetic.
