"THAT'S AN ODD looking book", you'll think, if you come across this device. Capable of holding its own in dimensions against a hardbound Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, its ingenious design allows it to fit smoothly into places where other external hard drives can't-such as bookshelves! In a matte-aluminium finish more popularly seen on Apple's MacBook Pro and iMac line-ups, it looks simple yet elegant. And of course, since it has 500GB of space, you can have your digital claustrophobia cured as well.

The edges of this external hard drive have rubberised grips that allow the device to be stable when standing and keep it slide-proof. On the side are dual neon-blue LED rings that indicate whether the device is powered on or off and blink when there's any disk activity taking place. Connectivity options are plentiful USB 2.0, Firewire 400and Firewire 800. Installation is pretty simple as well: just plug it in and it's up and ready. Under USB the drive performs just as well as its competitors like Maxtor's OneTouch or Seagate's FreeAgent but Firewire 800 is the star here. The file transfers are twice as fast under Firewire 800 so use this standard if your computer supports it.

Other than that, there isn't much heat generated and the device is just about noiseless. An added bonus is the provision of all connectivity cables required including Firewire 400/800 quite neat we think. There's some backup and recovery software present on the drive as well if you're a member of Paranoia Anonymous. In addition to the huge performance benefit provided, the device is stylish and well-deSigned as well. Makes us wonder why anyone wouldn't want to buy it.
