Default Acer Travelmate 240 won't keep the date and time if unplugged

I've only recently acquired thislaptop, a travelmate 240, and replaced Hard Drive and reinstalled XPPRO, even had to purchase novel a/c adapter/charger as it camewithout one (very cheap, release like a matter of fact). I have foundthat if I dn't go away the a/c adapter plugged in while I go to startit up, I acquire error messages stating that date and time is not insync. Date and time usually display like December 3, 2010 and time isusually 11:03:49 pm. what's up with that? Is my problem a bad or weakbattery or is it the little battery on the mother board?

I've been unemployed for 26 out of the last 36 months ( thanks Pres, stimulus is really working for me) therefore I incline to purchase used and repair if required. I've never worked on a laptop earlier like in disassemble, delete and/or replace parts, but I am just starting to study for my A+cert therefore I estimate it will be good training. I acquired this unit release 4m a recycler and it appeared in pretty good condition therefore I decided to do what it required as it would assist my studies I hope.

I have researched a small and that was the best reason I came up with as to why the date/time keeps reverting rear to 2011. I am too thinking that the laptop (main) battery may not be keeping a charge very long either.

I was only appearing at it this afternoon to watch how it came apart. I thought I had all the screws out but it wouldn't come apart from under the display flexible joint. Unsure where to appear for more screws as I may not see/find anymore on the rear. Appears as if the complete rear comes off as one piece, deduct the memory and modem saves and battery.

Hoping to acquire ideas as to directions to use as far as repairs and test them against what I'm learning as diagnostic acquirements start to take shape. I do appreciate your help and hope I don't wear out my welcome here. Thanks!

Specially after it was me who sought it out after selecting via a pile of them with this 1 being the most complete. Remember I acquired it from a recycler. E-waste it is called meaning electronic scrap.
I can't help myself. I usually detect myself attempting, or at least wanting, to settle broken stuff up so it can be useful again.

Shows how it arrives with apart, hence I will exchange the CMOS battery only to acquire how to. Even attempt to extract the wireless"board", for ID purposes. Detected manual on Acer europe site by accident. At present why would it be available in europe and not here??

Is the lack of details which means advice can be wrong. Free is fine but it changes the answers I would give.

    1. I'd acuire out my Volt Meter before altering the battery.
    2. Why pull the WIFI card?

I have for years only ID'd the laptop and off to the maker for the drivers.

Is it necessary to pull the wificard if I go with a pc card to do the like job or can it be left in there? Will it interfere if left in? As to altering the battery, I am appearing at it as a learning feel. I will even get out my vom and investigate it at the same time.

Another issue is presenting itself as we type. I am noticing that the cursor is disappearance at times and when it does I can't type and require to relocate it to proceed. Is this because I am not on a solid surface ( I have the laptop propped up on an ottoman) when typing? is this "cursor jump"?

As I said I'm just starting to get into this stuff and so not always sure just what might need to be known. I even did just that, downloaded all of the drivers that Acer had for this machine. These are the ones I'm dealing with. Where did you see the one with the 2008 date?

for the wireless security!! Should I still have the security trouble also going to a PC card for WIFI? Are the security choices driven by the device or the software or the OS?

(As for the beds and cushions, I am well cognizant of the venting consequences and have it sitting on a flat solid cover binder, which is what is actually sitting on the ottoman. Thanks for the heads up anyway.)

As for the "copy" of xp would I be able to upgrade it legally to vista or 7 or would I still have "problems" with it as the base of the upgrade?
