You require giving more information about your modern system. Then give what type of financial plan you are considering for your next buy.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.8ghz (775 socket)
Asus P5NSLI Motherboard
4gig (2x2048) DDR2 800mhz Corsair XMS
EVGA 8800GT 512 Mb gfx
original SoundBlaster Audigy SE
WD Caviar Black 1TB drive
I'm looking for either getting a cpu/mobo combo (the mobo doesn't like my windows 7 64bit) and spending under 250~ to stay it up till next summer OR just buying a 100-150~ cpu (quad core I'd guess).
I frequently surf the net, photoshop (for fun, nothing major) watch movies, edit music, game and not much else.
Is it worth the couple hundred for the performance boost now (another 9-12 months) or should I just wait for prices on the i7/i5's to plunge and build a new system next summer?
You have showing no reason to progress - that rig handles everything you do. If you desire to play with something, read up and try to overclock that CPU.
