Default Dell Dimension 8400 CPU Upgrade to Dual Core

I contain a Dell Dimension 8400 with a Pentium 4 Prescott DT 3.2GHZ CPU. I desire to promote to a Dual Core (maybe Intel E6600)? Can I perform this? I believe I have a Socket 775. How do I recognize for sure previous to I purchase? Also, I only have a 350W power supply. Is that enough for the E6600? I don't desire to restore the power supply. I've never restored a CPU and don't know much about this. I've already upgraded my RAM to 2GB and replaced my graphics card with a GeForce 7600GT. would you improve the CPU on this machine? I actually love the Dual Core CPU I just acquired with my new laptop. I desire one for my desktop. I welcome any thoughts!

The Motherboard would not be capable of grip Pentium D nor Will it ever be equal to handle a Core 2 Duo (you require a 965 Intel Chipset or improved) and you require a minimum of 450W power supply, your 350W power supply is previously harassed as it is.

You will have to dump your Dell system, for a Core 2 Duo built you'll require to do a total fresh new construct.

My respond will be followed by people who are eager to tell you precisely what you need to do build unused system.

Read the underscores EDIT I’ve just additional over. If you like keep your money and you could have a Quad-Core(Q6600) structure for the precise similar cost as a E6600(Dual-Core).

Actually you won’t have any difficulty replacing the CPU, though if you really desire to employ your pc you might have a difficulty. The first difficulty is your mobo; all Core 2 Duo's need a new voltage controller to role, if your computer is pre C2D your mobo probably won’t job with a C2D. There’s also the chipset, older chipsets don’t have core 2 hold. Your psu possibly won’t be a difficulty, since the chip you’re presently using needs many more power then any C2D.

Got it! I'll perhaps press another year beyond my current system and then I'll create over from scrape with a new Quad Core construct for the cost of a Dual Core now. I similar to the plan! Especially, since my computer does what I require it to do for now.
    Thanks.

All the counsel I can give you is to grasp until costs drop for Core 2 Duo cpus. I have a customized dell 4550 (I modded it mostly for the knowledge) that I added a new gpu, more memory, a new psu (that I had to slash the case out for) and lastly a new hard drive...

Remember you, I don't actually utilize this comp any more since I constructed my Core rig, BUT it still isn't too shabby...

If you don't desire your 8400, I could buy it....or you could just give it to me!

A "built system" is what? Trusts the excellence of the merchandises but attempt selling it afterward. Darn near impracticable for yet a part of what you've got in it. Fior example, how many water-cooled gaming systems price almost 2 grand to construct so far try to get 500 out of them 6 months later. I employed to think "built" was improved BUT who you going to acquire to attach it? I denote even if you get the parts out and send them back yourself?

The cause I am posting this respond is because I had the precise query my friend posted. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with 4GB Ram. I have improved all I could perhaps think of in an attempt to obtain Vista off the ground on my machine - I recognize it was a mistake but I want to try and recover the remains by installing Windows 7. I was in fact trying to update with a Celeron processor in place of a C2D. I shaped a dual core is improved than a single core P4. But no dice. Any suggestion?

Can anybody reply Celli's original question of how to determine the socket? I'm quite sure its a 775 but I don't recognize how to verify.
