Many people who obtain their notebook from home to the workplace may run into a problem of having to employ a dynamic IP address at home and a static at the office. There is a mode to have both settings in your pattern so you do not require changing them each time you change locations.

Attend your network connection properties by right clicking My Network Places and picking Properties. Then right click your Local Area Connection icon and select Properties again. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties. You will observe a window close to the following.

Click on the Alternate Configuration tab. Note that if you do not have contained an IP address automatically chosen you will not observe this tab.

Enter your static IP data in the boxes and click OK.

One side effect of using this form of configuration is that it will obtain a little longer for Windows to totally load since it will first search for an IP address from a DHCP server before using the exchange configuration.
