Thread: Is Antec 380W enough for an ATI 4650?

Hi friends, I desire to construct an HTPC for my family (they provided me a budget and I do the dirty work...). I've acquired most of the components succeed out.

But there is one object I'm undecided about. I've selected a case which is the Antec NSK2480; it arrives with an Antec 380W PSU. The question is will that PSU power an ATI 4650 (and the rest of the rig) for HD playback on my TV or is that (gfx power) overkill and I should just attach to a 785 chipset mobo (AM3) with an included HD4200?

I acquired an Antec Neopower 550 and it does fine with an 8800gtx so with you ea385 you will do okay and have space to improve later on. PS the ea650 isn't that huge.

Ample power need for a HTPC.My E6600 (not all the power competent) + 8800GTX (similar here) system runs on a 450 watt Smart Power (this fad only has a MAX of 32 amps on 12 vs. 27 on the EA380).

You should not have any troubles at all. The ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card is an energy competent card. During strain testing which is much more power difficult than home theater employ, a system with the 4650 pointed at a maximum power draw at the wall outlet (mains) at 185 watts. That's for the whole system.

Video card and power supply producers misjudge power supply necessities because they recognize people insist on buying low budget power supplies of dubious performance and value.

I'm not certain I would want to try operating at 9800GTX, but I might think some of the more power competent cards.

The best card I would attempt would be the kind of new ATI 4770-- it is quite low power user. Safer yet would be a 9800GT, a GT 240 or a 9600GT. (9600 and 240 are like in power-9800 is enhanced) All would be improved than a 4670, but would price more.

The new GT 240s have a 300w power obligation, and the older 9800 and 9600s only have a 400w obligation, so I am certain an Antec part could handle them. Those necessities are made for cheap PSUs.

It's pretty trying, when producers say that you require as a minimum a 400W. Just beyond interest, Invisik, how much higher can you go?
