Default Buy SD ext. What to choose?

    Hello everyone.

I am a switcher to MBP in a few weeks. Small problem, it's hard to both find and evaluate disks that match my criteria:

    I need:

    * Firewire Port 800: must not mess are two usb on a MBP so far keep them available, in addition to the FW 800 is faster =)

    * 500GB Mini: I'll take the 320GB version on the MBP, so a little light for the management of videos of my camera (HD 720 * 1080) I want to ride with iMovie.

    * Compatible with Mac and PC: I am the only one in my family to go to Apple and I certainly need to exchange some files.

I have no special requirements regarding the size of the case. Especially for the 500 GB, it generally exceeds the good old brick. Side type, not the DSS, I cannot afford.

I have some suggestions, eh not compare, you will find it as a great looking, but what format are you looking for?

"Mac Compatible" They are all before or after formatting. Especially if it has a FW800 port.

What type of format? Housing or storage format (fat 32 or otherwise)?

For compatibility yes for sure, but the important thing is "Mac and PC". After I realized that the important thing is the choice of formatting.

FAT32 compatible with everyone, but it seems that binding with respect to the size of files transferred.

NTFS for Mac be forgotten, unless it is paid software to be able to write to disk.

Another format (remember the name Mac range?) And Mac, not possible in my case.
Finally I saw that we could make two partitions on it. But in this case, we cannot share files between Mac and PC right? Except if Windows can read the Mac partition (using Mac Scope)?

The format is the 2.5 'or 3.5', what size.
For compatibility, they are all Mac and PC, just format it as HFS +.Yes, FAT32 happening everywhere read / write but is limited to a file size of 4 GB Huh?
You can make 4 partitions if you want, it is not bound.

What would be great too if you're rich, it is a network hard drive (more strictly speaking a NAS) such the MyBook, but with gigabit Ethernet.

Me I have not but when I transfer files between my PC and my Mac, I use a cable rj45 crossover between the two and a ca super good speed (60/80 MB / s). Also AC is compatible with any bone not need to take the head with the file system.

Ideally this would be the best choice but a CT then I think I need (for my studies) to get around with a hard drive to share some files with friends.

Not rich (yet = P) I confine myself to an external HD Classic to exchange files quickly and I even store photos and HD videos. If Windows cannot read HFS + I think I'll do it like this:

    * Exchange files and small ways: USB flash mem
    * File Storage: External HDD HFS + partition (450 GB) and FAT32 (50GB) to be versatile.
    * Exchange of large files or large files: crossover cable.

I did not want to seem impolite or rude, far from it. Just that I do not say a thousand thank you both posts.

So when I say I already feel much more advanced than the starting point. This is the case now thanks to you and 0ver9k. A review on the WD?

Once this standard is not much to ask after this is a matter of education.
I do not know, you said not to have an opinion between 2.5 self-powered, and a 3.5 and it is very important to me because it determines the size. Transport or transportation pat, etc.
This version seems to date, I bought a few years ago and the last I, which dates back to shortly, is much smaller, if the transport is.

Ok, next time I would put a "thank you" in a mechanical way, which I think will lose value. So what would DD is more recent and better the shot.

No transportation is not really a concern. Self powered or not. I just have a 500 GB Good quality FireWire 800. As long as it is I have not followed the market is mainly external HD side "quality" which I lack.

So if someone can enlighten me on this point it would be nice.

Ok for the price, as I dropped more than 1000 € for the Mac that would suit me to limit the cost for the DD. But at value for money, what brand (or model) which goes in 3.5'?
