Gotham City Impostors is an enigma ofRiddler proportions. With the one hand, its a multiplayer justfirst-person shooter that caricatures on many of the trappings andtropes of the Call of Duty franchise. But instead of taking the triedand true multiplayer mechanics of those games and wrapping them in amodern military vaneer, Monolith Productions rather decided to skewerthe Batman mythos. What results is an unusual bring with Gotham Citythe likes of which gamers will have never watched earlier. Impostorsis fun as well if there are few awkward plan aspects that mar theexperience.

Sure, the first thing players willnotice is the visual aesthetic and the time of day. This is not anArkham franchise Batman game, and the dark brooding Gothic atmosphereof Rock steady’s hit series is nowhere to be watched. It is aGotham City bathed in daylight, where the actual Batman is off livingthe more normal portion of his life as Bruce Wayne, and the actualJoker is either in hiding or captured.

Thus although the two nemeses areindisposed, their fans apply the familiar landscape of the city liketheir personal playground. Nevertheless, these disciples have nomoney or influence to give the non-lethal gadgets of Batman or thedeadly accouterments of Joker. Sure, they cobble together their suitsand weapons from spare parts and loose craftwork.

May be the most fascinating part ofthis thought is how the visual aesthetic feeds into the game play. The first area where this is instantly seeming is traversal. If I hadto afford Impostors major kudos for anything, its the game’sability to bring the dead concept of jump pads and use it in a modernFPS. The jump pads in this case are exercisers dispelled throughouteach map allowing players to leap to high roofs with no trouble.

Levels as well characteristic rampsfor players that select to apply roller skates to move about and airvents for gliding. Gliding, in fact, was my favorite means oftraversal, like a knowledge of the air vents in each map allowed meto glide almost continuously and dive bomb unsuspecting opponents.Traversing every of the game’s five maps is too vital that everyplayer as well has access to unlimited sprinting.

Impostors characteristic two ways ofplay in addition to the standard team death match. The other two waysare Fumigation, a capture-and-hold game type where each team istrying to control gas blasters in order to immediately kill theopposing team and win, and Psych Warfare, a capture the flag gametype where the object is to capture a battery to power your team’spropaganda machine. They are interesting variants with the standardclassics from other shooters and the funny bits of dialog from theannouncers for each team plus few flavor to the proceedings.

Deprived down shooters are a dime adozen these days, and I must admit that, initially, I was skepticalof a game that made no secret of the fact that its central conceptwas derived from the opening scene of The Dark Knight. Still, laterspending time with Gotham City Impostors I can say that I had a goodtime, and would enjoy to watch Monolith do something more on thethought in the future. In fact, I would love to watch a humoroussingle player campaign to go along with this experience. Gotham CityImpostors supplies an oasis for those of us tapped out from modernmilitary syndrome, and an original variation on the Batman theme. Ifthe community proceeds to grow, it can just acquire better.
