Latest fad in the mobile fraternity is having a 5 megapixel camera, and Samsung has joined the club with the SGH-G600 slider phone. The talking point is the brilliant 5 MP camera with LED flash. The bright, 2.2-inch TFT screen auto adjusts brightness using a light sensor and to top it off, it's dynamic. It becomes cloudy when the GSM signal is low and clears out when the signal is at full power. Comfort level with the keypad and soft keys was quite high, as they are well placed.
Navigation key is in the shape of a dial which reacts well to the touch. The slide action of the phone is quite sturdy too. It weighs 104 grams, which is a bit more than other sliders like the Samsung 0900 that weighs only 85 grams. But this slight weight increase can be overlooked as the 5 MP camera is a big plus. Talking of the camera: it is one of the best I have seen in the 5 MP range of camera phones, comparing the Nokia N95, N82, and the Sony Ericsson K850i (only the N82 is better in the camera department).
It has auto focus and gave some really good shots both indoors and outdoors. I only wish it came with a proper xenon flash like the Sony Ericssons or Nokia N82. Even the videos were quite nice but you do need a very steady hand to click pictures and videos, as the slightest movement of the hand can blur out a picture. It does not have a separate loudspeaker; the ear piece doubles up as a loudspeaker. Owing to this, the volume does suffer, but it's great with the very decent pair of earphones supplied in the box. There is 55 MB of onboard memory with a microSD slot for extended memory.
Bluetooth, USB, GPRS, and EDGE are the data transfer options, and you also have TV-out. If you're the type who hates boring menus, you'll like the G600 because you can slide menu items from right to left, use door-type transitions, zoom, or fade the items in and out. Adding to all this, the phone also has an FM radio and music player, and a decent enough battery for about a day's use (4 hour continuous talktime). Recommended if you want the 5 MP in a slider form factor.
