Sony Ericsson does not have much business smartphones to its forte. After the P990i, it has launched only M600i and P1i for business users. The P1i features improved form factor and is based on the UIQ 3.1, which means support from developers across the world. The phones' appeal is its black-and silver-coloured body. With its hand-writing recognition feature and a 'QWERTY' keypad, typing messages on the P1i is a breeze despite the fact that all its keys are designed for two functions. In fact, far from being off-putting, we found this design quite innovative. For connectivity, the Pli features 3G, Bluetooth, A2Dp, Infrared, USB and WLAN. The Pli is A2DP Bluetooth compliant and hence can be connected to a wireless stereo headset for music playback. It also supports video calls.

Weighing 124 grams, the Pli features a touch-screen of 2.6 inches that is capable of displaying at a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The imaging functions of the phone are controlled by an integrated 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus. The pictures produced by the phone look as good on its LCD as on PC's TFT screen. The phone features a second front-facing camera for video calls. The device can also be controlled with a jog-dial found. There is also a back button that enables you to get out of applications and menus. The phone comes with a mammoth internal memory of 160 MB which includes a M2 memory expansion card that makes it possible to increase the memory.

The P1i sees an increase in RAM which makes it stable, which means that running more applications on the Pli will not throw up low memory messages. Targeted at business users, the device can open and edit office documents. It has a business card scanner program which makes it easy to capture contacts that are to be saved. There is a single connector at the bottom of the P li that allows you to charge and sync the phone. Sony Ericsson bundles a sync/charge cradle with the Pli. Besides the power adapter, the phone can also be charged on a PC through a USB cable. With WLAN, 3G and a faster response time, the P1i seems to be a good phone for business users. The phone is priced at Rs.17 ,500 and comes with a one-year warranty.
