TOUCH SCREEN CONTROL, 8GB of memory, built-in WiFi: so far, so iPhone. In fact, Sony Ericsson's latest Walkmanphone/Phoneman/ Walkphone (delete as applicable) manages to go even further than Apple in many respects, with built-in TrackID tune recognition, 3G support and a camera that sucks somewhat less. In practice, however, the W 960i isn't without its own selection of thundering flaws. Everything you do with it seems to take about twice as long as you'd expect, and you'll most likely ignore its touchscreen altogether, because it's almost invariably easier to use the jog dial and keypad.

Sound quality is excellent though, with MegaBass and other equaliser options at your disposal to help improve the audio further. Even the supplied, in-ear Sony buds do a fairly good job, though it's easy enough to replace them. Playlist support, video playback and an FM radio finish off the package nicely as music players on phones go, it's very hard to beat.
