The Bottom Line
The Sony Ericsson z550a is an upper-level average cell phone. It has no major annoyance yet, no special quality either. It offers a relatively good look at a fair price, with fair functionality.
Pros
Feels and looks nice
Good picture quality, fair camera options and navigation

The Sony Ericsson z550a, offered in Canada by Fido, is a light and simple clamshell model. The 1.3 megapixel camera
Of course, you need to get used to Sony Ericsson's usual call management system with no red (hang up) and green button, and there are also, here and there, some unefficient menu systems. For example, once you take a picture, you need to select two menu items to take another picture. The keypad is a shame. With a form factor that big, Sony Ericsson could have afford to give us something better than small plastic keys that could have used much more space (for big fingers) and are unpleasant to press. They feel like a dollar store toy.
Speakerphone-wise, it takes forever to get a "speaker" button after initiating a call. But sound quality was good even if with too much treble and less bass. the output volume was sufficient and my calling parties wouldn't complain about echo or other typical speakerphone problems. There are no dedicated keys such as speakerphone, camera or voice note / voice control. The only side keys are tiny (too tiny) volume control keys.
All in all, the Sony Ericsson z550a appears like a very average phone, but a good one since the fundamentals are up to speed with today's standards.
