Not one to be squeezed into the back pocket of your Levi's, this baby marks Sony's official entry into the world of netbooks. Yes, that's right; the Vaio W is a propah netbook, as conventional as they come.
Being a Vaio, it does inherit some of the trappings associated with the premium brand - great build, nice matt finish, the stylish logo etched on the lid - but little else. The sole breaking news here is the high screen resolution this lO.l-incher can boast of. Not only is the screen as clear as a sunny day, the high screen res means you can see a lot more - and for a netbook with a cramped screen, it means that the usability goes up dramatically since you rarely need to scroll.
The chicklet keyboard is a delight. Even though the keys are replicas of the real chiclet, they are well spaced out and are a joy to use. The trackpad is quite responsive and accurate too.
Beyond this, the netbook is plain earthbound - Atom processor, 1 gig of system memory, 160-gig storage, Wi-Fi. Bluetooth, VGA webcam. Nothing really to tell the colleague sitting in the cubicle next to yours, leave alone shout at the top of your voice. Battery life is quite average, but the performance is well up to the mark, no complaints there.
If you're amongstthose who believe in 'It's a Sony', then this is surely your prize. Else, it's a whirlpool that sucks in a king-sized wedge of your savings pie even before you can say "Vaio". The price is not very far from an entry-level but full-sized laptop. Still, it is a Sony!
