    Default VirtualBox failure

I setup VirtualBox with Ubuntu 11.10today, Created a vm of XPPro32 bit all went alright, till yet Ineeded to apply USB's. Did few reading, and downloaded the extensionpack from the Oracle virtualbox website, as somebody suggested, andattempted to run my vm and acquired few error msg. part of the errormsg stated that if this error proceeded attempt uninstalling VB andreinstalling.. Okay did that 2x's now and now acquire this error msg.Of course being a newbie to Ubuntu I am lost, and am grateful for anyguidance/suggestions.

Are you running the OSE Or the non-free edition? It is only that the OSE edition is the one that arrives on the repos in Ubuntu and that does not support USB virtualization. Have you attempted uninstalling the extension pack first then the program itself?

I am running the one that arrives from the "Ubuntu Software Center", Free, the extension pack I acquired from the Oracle site. I thought of uninstalling only the extension pack, but can not detect it anywhere to uninstall. Thus what you are saying is that the free edition is not going to backup the USB virtualization?

Yeah there is a big trouble on USB support in the OSE version but the good news is that now you can download the the other version from the software manager. As for the extension try going into the synaptic package manager rather than the software centre and in the search box type "oracle" or "virtualbox" and that should afford you list of what you have installed and can setup which will contain the so called non-free version of vbox. I would suggest uninstalling the OSE version in package manager like considerable.

I trust non-free is in reference to freedom not price. Virtual box has a fully open source version and a proprietary version. The latter would be the non-free.

Considerable I have switched to the 64bit version of Ubuntu in an attempt to let more memory for my XP VM, but now it sounds that I have to install some 32libs??? to acquire the "non-free" version to work correctly. If that is the case, later I uninstall OSE version, how to I setup that 32lib??

Yeah I ended up going on the "non-free" edition, Then installed the extensions, from what I understand now I have to plus my user to the vbox users group, thus hopefully I can acquire that done today.

I setup few gnome system tools, It has a GUI "users and groups", I opened that up, found vboxusers and added to that group. The error message that applied to pop up has since then disappeared, but I am however unable to watch the USB when I plug something in. It will show up in Ubuntu, but not in VM of XP.

Yes I have, In reading the assist file "USB not working" 12.6.7 it intends affording rights to user in the USB group. I can not detect a USB group, it does refer that it is for older systems, thus maybe that does not use to 11.10 version.

Sounds plausible, afford it a attempt and allow us experience if it works. If that is the case then it is a much more of work to go via to acquire USB support to work in ubuntu, hopefully they sort that out for future releases.
