Thread: What would be the approximate cost to setup a new display?

My wife has a Mac Laptop that evolved alarge black spot on the display when a small picture frame fell off ashelf and struck the display. The black spot is growing in size everyday it is applied. It is a 13 inch MacBook3.1about 5 - 6 years oldon OS 10.5.8. Trying to determine whether to acquire it repaired orfeel for a novel MacBook?

At 5-6 years, that would keep it with the Apple Vintage list at a minimum, meaning just repair shops in the state of California could acquire parts. Without that, then you are left on increasingly sketchy alternatives. Personally, afforded the age of the thing, you would almost surely spend more repairing it as compare to the resale value if it were in perfect working order. I'd just toss the thing up on ebay for parts to assist mitigate the costs of a new unit.

My son's 13 inch Macbook display required altering about two years ago. It was a learning experience! We purchased an aftermarket display that was much cheaper as compare to anything that Apple and its stores had for sale. We as well learned that the overpriced displays that Apple had for sale were manufactured by other companies like Apple did not create its own display.

We acquired the necessary installation information online and installed it ourselves. It brought about two hours and the biggest challenges were holding track of the various parts and working with very small screws – do not attempt it if you do not have good vision and the dexterity to line up and tighten tiny parts.

Why would you think Apple manufactured their own displays? Most of them arrive from LG, some Samsung , which is not perfectly a secret. And of course a big chunk of what you are paying for on purchasing from Apple is the 90 day warranty on the repair. They have to figure a certain percentage will fail inside that period , and they will have to replace those, thus all is costed accordingly to let for them to however make a profit overall.

If you test my first paragraph you will remark that I said that Apple did NOT manufacture their own displays, which we learned as we did our homework. Happily we did it ourselves. And the display we installed lasted longer as compare to the original.

The just way you could "find out" this information is if you were below the impression Apple was the one manufacturing them in the first place. This has never been the case in the complete history of Apple. You have any thought how much it costs to construct a fabrication facility for building the chips needed in a computer? Even in 1970s dollars, when Apple was detected, we would be talking at least tens of millions. Today it is simply hundreds of millions to even billions. Never mind being able to pay the people with the necessary skills to produce the chips.

Anyway, I would as well need that the cost you were quoted contained the labor to install it, which is rather a bit of work on the older MacBooks as you may have noticed. Full load of chances to damage something in the process if you don't know what you are doing. Risk you are assuming if you do it yourself, but if things go pear shaped when someone else is doing it, they are with the hook to fix it with their dime.

In any case, it is a false decision without experiencing what really caused the original to fail, to say that there was something inherently better about the third party one. Simple fact is, most things follow your basic bell curve. Some will fail before, most fail inside a sure time frame, and then there are a few that just appear to last forever.

The 17 inch required this repair plus the keyboard but luckily it was covered below extended warranty. This is 7 years old but as far as I am concerned however a great computer better then any PC. I would go to a reputable repair shop. I have one nearby and the guy is very reasonable!
