Just like the Virtua Fighter franchise, SNK's trademark series, The King of Fighters became one of the very few franchises that had the power to stand up to
the big guns like Street Fighter and Tekken.

The Slugfest was undoubtedly the best the series had to offer in the form of an incredibly balanced fighting engine, 3 on 3 battle arenas and all the favorite music tracks of the previous years in it. Sure, it wasn't as stylish as its counterparts but it did manage to stand tall because of its varied and controlled mechanics.
